Her organs were shutting down, but it would not stop her from marrying Nick Godwin, 23, who was in love with Katie since 11th grade. Five days later, Katie died."

This past Saturday, I was incredibly lucky to attend a Photo 101 class in Phoenix taught by Nicole Hill Gerulat. The first half of the day consisted of instruction and I learned quite a bit. For the second half of the day, we had a photoshoot where we were able to practice different lighting techniques as well as get Nicole's feedback. To sum it up, this class was amazing and I highly recommend it to anyone that is interested in photography. Check it out here.

Roller Derby

This past Sunday, my friend Lola and I checked out the Texas Rollergirls. I've never been to a roller derby so I didn't know what to expect. Let me tell you, it was so much fun! I would highly recommend it to anyone! Check it out!
{I'm not crazy about my pictures but I still wanted to show them. The lighting in the venue was definitely working against me and hopefully, I can get my hands on an external flash before the next time.}

Seven Wonders of the World

Junior high school students in Chicago were studying the Seven Wonders of the World. At the end of the lesson, the students were asked to list what they considered to be the Seven Wonders of the World.

Though there was some disagreement, the following received the most votes:

1. Egypt’s Great Pyramids
2. The Taj Mahal in India
3. The Grand Canyon in Arizona
4. The Panama Canal
5. The Empire State Building
6. St. Peter’s Basilica
7. China’s Great Wall

While gathering the votes, the teacher noted that one student, a quiet girl, hadn’t turned in her paper yet. So she asked the girl if she was having trouble with her list. The quiet girl replied, “Yes, a little. I couldn’t quite make up my mind because there were so many.” The teacher said, “Well, tell us what you have, and maybe we can help.”

The girl hesitated, then read, “I think the Seven Wonders of the World are:
1. to touch…
2. to taste…
3. to see…
4. to hear… (She hesitated a little, and then added…)
5. to feel…
6. to laugh…
7. and to love.

The room was so quiet, you could have heard a pin drop.

Fallen Princesses

Growing up, I was a big fan of Disney Princesses. Like most little girls I loved the idea of getting all dressed up and living in a castle. A project I recently stumbled upon called "Fallen Princesses" by Vancouver photographer Dina Goldstein places my beloved fairy tale characters in modern day scenarios. According to her website, in all of the images, the Princess is placed in an environment that articulates her conflict. The '...happily ever after' is replaced with a realistic outcome and addresses current issues. Though I wholeheartedly believe in 'happily ever after's', I really appreciate the creativity behind this project. The pictures are quite stunning.

Handwriting

Have you ever watched someone sign something and you find yourself in awe of their beautiful signature? I do this all time.
I'm envious.
My signature is a scribbly-scrabbly mess.
Actually, to be precise, my cursive handwriting is the mess.
It would be just lovely to be able to send beautifully handwritten letters to the people I love most.
So I think I should learn calligraphy. The other day, I purchased a calligraphy pen.
Now I just need this and this. :)
Plus I'll be able to seal said letters with the pretty wax seal and sparkly green wax I purchased! :)

Update: My sweet friend, Mary gave me these books for my birthday. Thank you Mary!

P.S. I found this fun website today.
It allows you to write emails to yourself in the future. You write it and then choose a date that you'd like to receive it on...and they send it. It's quite fun, and sure to be surprising (especially if you write one to be delivered in 5 years like i did.) Although, it is pretty confusing to write a letter to yourself...i wasn't sure if i should say "you" or "we" or "i"...

the joy of sleeping

One of my favorite things to do is sleep. Nothing can go wrong when you're asleep, and even if things are crazy in your real life the time when you're asleep can be so simple. The whole world is perfect for just that little while. Anywho, I typically sleep 8 - 9 hours but lately, I've been suffering from a touch of insomnia. I miss my sleep.

If only I was as cute of a sleeper as Audrey Hepburn...

Maybe I would sleep better. I obviously need one of these. :)

It's a new year! Usually New Year's Eve doesn't have much effect on me. In the past, it has just been a calendar change but this year, something's different. I did thoroughly enjoy changing my calendar though. It's Barbie vintage. This is a picture of January. Anywho, I have been very inspired to change my life recently. So I have created a list of goals. At the exact same time as everyone else. Unlike everyone else though, mine isn't really a list of 'goals' because I am definitely going to make them happen. So here's what is going to happen this year. ;)
1. Pursue a photography career
2. Participate in the Capitol 10k
3. Meet new people and make new friends
4. Read my growing pile of books
5. Take a picture a day. {365}
6. Be financially independent and move out. (No offense to my current roommates. Love you.)

So that's it. And hopefully, there will be a few surprises thrown in there as well. 2010 is going to be a great year!
